An interesting move from BMW in the US has emerged this week with confirmation that for the first three months of sales in the US, the i3 will only be available as a ‘Launch Edition’.
This version of the i3 comes with pretty much all the possible add-ons and options in the i3 range. In fact, the only choices left to the customer will be colour, size of wheels and whether to have the REx or not.
Reported on insideevs.com by BMW Electronaut Tom Moloughney, this move has potentially upset a lot of people who were waiting to order an i3 but didn’t want every single option.
The launch edition i3 will include:
- Base: $41,350
- Color: $550
- Tera world package: $2700
- Parking Package: $1000
- Tech+Driving Assist: $2500
- Heated Front Seats: $350
- DC Fast Charging: $700
- Harman/Kardon sound system: $800
- Destination and handling fees: $925
This brings the total to $50,875 for the pure-battery electric version or $54,725 for the REx version.
Any customers who don’t want all these options will now need to wait until the three-month window has passed.
This is contrary to what is happening in mainland Europe and the UK where buyers are able to get the car spec they would like, albeit with a long wait.
But there are some exceptions to this ‘Launch Edition’ package in the US. If you are lucky enough to be one of BMW’s Electronauts, you’ll still be able to buy an i3 with whatever options you like. This is along with enjoying priority ordering over other buyers.
