Thought of the Day: Charge Socket Placement

Mark replies to Nikki’s thoughts from Friday on the average EV driver and talks about the placement of charging sockets.

Unlike our other shows, Thought of the Day is our chance to muse on one big story in the news each day, using it as a spring board to explore other topics, sometimes even outside of the Transport Evolved universe. Every weekday, Nikki and Mark will take it in turns to explore a story that catches our eye, developing a back and forth conversation between Transport Evolved’s two regular hosts.

As with our Quick Charge series, our Thought of the Day will be recorded very simply on a single smartphone, but then quickly edited together using the jump cut edit style popular with many YouTube vlogs. We think this style complements our other shows and offers us a different way to share our thoughts with you, our readers and viewers.

    I actually prefer to back into most spots, so EV charge port placement in the REAR is actually preferable to me. The Active E was on the passenger side and the Model S and Roadsters are on the driver side (left hand drive vehicles). nnn I’ve long espoused what Richard Glover wrote previously. The SINGLE input model is a very ICE way of looking at things. There is NO reason to have multiple locations for the EV plug to go into. Internal wiring can be made so that a driver can plug into any of multiple port locations in the car and the electronics will navigate as to which one to draw power from. This actually serves a good purpose in that if a particular port is damaged, at least there is a secondary (tertiary, and so on) port to use to get the car charged up!

    Generally, it is safer to back into a parking spot so Tesla’s and BMW’s placement makes sense. However most people in the US are used to park head in so placing the receptacle in the front of the car makes more sense to them. And of course many would argue that the front quarter panel on the driver’s side makes the most sense as the driver does not have to walk as much and the plug is accessible from the front, the side, and the back.

  • I like the charging port on the front where the EV1 had it and where the Leaf has it. It is easy to get to, easy to reach (even with short EVSE cables such as DCQC), there is no need to back in (difficult in angled downtown parking), and there is less trip hazard.
