Thought of the Day: EV Controversy

Mark replies to Nikki’s thoughts from yesterday on auto dealer associations, and talks about how controversy around EVs may be a good thing.

Unlike our other shows, Thought of the Day is our chance to muse on one big story in the news each day, using it as a spring board to explore other topics, sometimes even outside of the Transport Evolved universe. Every weekday, Nikki and Mark will take it in turns to explore a story that catches our eye, developing a back and forth conversation between Transport Evolved’s two regular hosts.

As with our Quick Charge series, our Thought of the Day will be recorded very simply on a single smartphone, but then quickly edited together using the jump cut edit style popular with many YouTube vlogs. We think this style complements our other shows and offers us a different way to share our thoughts with you, our readers and viewers.

    Further to what I said to Nikki TOTD.n I went on about a Tesco Supercharger Network some while ago and in my corespondance with James Wright of Nissan suggested selling ev through Tesco as this would provide the incentive to have the rapid charger installations and I felt at the time that the Nissan dealerships lacked enthusiasm for ev.nI still think it a good idea. I could see Tesco draw up a specification of a Leaf that they felt best for their customers and place an order with Sunderland.nIt just requires bigger trolleys.nAnd it would start some controversy in the UK.

    Mark:nExtra plugs and additional copper cable represent weight and additional cost factors. In fact some Leaf owners grouse about the secondary lead acid 12 volt battery being too heavy. Using the same Lithium battery technology as the traction batteries, the secondary battery could be half the weight or less.nnnNotice Texas, Arizona, and now New Jersey all have Republican Governors who say they are for free trade. It is hypocritical for them to say they are for free trade then turn around and restrict a company’s right to sell products in their state. I hope the voters remember this at the next election.
