Thought of the Day: Right to Tinker? (Nikki, March 31, 2014)

Nikki responds to Mark’s thoughts from Friday on helping people switch to plug-in cars, and asks if we have a right as electric car owners to modify or ‘tinker’ with our cars and charging stations?

Unlike our other shows, Thought of the Day is our chance to muse on one big story in the news each day, using it as a spring board to explore other topics, sometimes even outside of the Transport Evolved universe. Every weekday, Nikki and Mark will take it in turns to explore a story that catches our eye, developing a back and forth conversation between Transport Evolved’s two regular hosts.

As with our Quick Charge series, our Thought of the Day will be recorded very simply on a single smartphone, but then quickly edited together using the jump cut edit style popular with many YouTube vlogs. We think this style complements our other shows and offers us a different way to share our thoughts with you, our readers and viewers.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I’ve always built my own PCs, and would naturally like to tweak my car as well, but unfortunately the law – probably rightfully so – sees cars as something entirely different from PCs, as they are on public roads and pose a possible safety problem. But of course it’s quite normal to tweak your ICE car, so maybe it’s just a matter of the market maturing.

Used EVs are a risk because of the high replacement cost of the traction battery. When rebuilt, higher density batteries are available they will be bargains.

I am just not sure what image electric cars have but as with so much in life, first impressions count for a lot.nnFirst impression of a Leaf or Zoe or E-UP ?nThatu2019s a lot of money for such an ordinary car.nnI didnu2019t feel that with the i3 and I suspect I wonu2019t feel that on viewing a Tesla in the flesh.nnSo I say, get the price right first, and then if they are still not selling, worry about the image.
