Experience a Better Ride, Buy an Electric Car, Says Cute CA Informercial

Here at Transport Evolved, we love quirky informercials and adverts designed to get more people behind the wheel of an electric car. While we’ve witnessed some really bad howlers in our time (remember the Chevrolet Volt dance?) we’ve started to see some really decent ads in the past few months, most noticeably from Tesla fans.

Now there’s a new electric car infomercial on the block which is both cute and funny while not taking itself too seriously.

Enter The Better Ride, part of the Experience Electric campaign launched a month ago by the Center for Sustainable Energy in California. Produced in an effort to accelerate electric car adoption in the San Francisco Bay area, Experience Electric consists of a series of electric car workshops held this summer where interested residents can talk to electric car owners about their cars, find out about plug-in incentives and charging in their area, and most importantly, life with an electric car.

The video is to promote those workshops. In it, we follow ‘Stan’, who has just purchased a new Fiat 500 EV. With the savings, Stan has found he can eat fancy food — even if he doesn’t like shellfish — chill out with his mechanic in the pool, and drive around the Bay Area on a single charge.

And of course, Stan’s coffee — which he can now afford with the savings from driving electric — is fair trade too. All because he drives an electric car…

Admittedly, this informercial is all a bit light-hearted, but we think it’s just silly enough to get people interested in driving an electric car. Most importantly, it focuses on the things which most people will find important: the financial and temporal benefits of owning an electric car in California.

Why cover it, one month after the campaign launched? As Eric Smith on Facebook noticed this week, the video has only received a few hundred views in the past month. And frankly, if the aforementioned Volt Dance has more than 19,000 views on YouTube, we think this public informercial from the folks at the Center for Sustainable Energy deserves more eyeballs.

So go on, share. We think it’ll make you smile. After all, who wouldn’t want to be the Diplomat of Awesomeland?

    Cute but strange. nThey exclude the best selling electric car in the world, the Nissan LEAF. Make a big deal about less maintenance cause of no transmission, engine etc., then show a Chevy Volt at the end which does have a transmission, gas tank, gas engine, etc. etc., all the things they said weren’t needed in an electric car.nSounded more like a FIAT commercial and Nissan didn’t pay up.
