Happy Birthday: Tesla Museum Gets Supercharger, $1 Million Donation, on Tesla’s Birthday

Today, 158 years ago in Smiljan, Croatia, a boy call Nikola Tesla was born. That little boy would grow into one of the twentieth centuries’ greatest inventors. Today, the Californian electric automaker named in his honour has announced it will be building a special Tesla Supercharger station in the parking lot of the Tesla Museum, a non-profit project to restore and rebuild Tesla’s former workshop in Shoreham, New York.

For his 158th birthday, Nikola Tesla is being given a Supercharger.

For his 158th birthday, Nikola Tesla is being given a Supercharger.

Originally called Wardenclyffe, Tesla’s workshop was home to Tesla’s grand vision of providing wireless power to the world. Sadly, much of the building was demolished in 1917 and passed into the ownership of a film manufacturer. But after the site went back up for sale, a successful crowd funded appeal spearheaded by Matthew Inman — the guy behind the highly popular Oatmeal online comic — secured the site and its restoration as the first museum in the U.S. to be dedicated to the father of the AC Motor and many other cool inventions.

With plans well underway for the Nikola Tesla Museum and Science Centre, Inman hinted yesterday on Facebook that Musk had just spoken with him and shared some very cool news — but said we’d all have to wait until Tesla’s actual birthday to find out more.

It was worth the wait.

A few moments, ago, Inman confirmed that Tesla Motors will build a Supercharger site in the parking lot of the new Tesla Museum, adding Tesla CEO Elon Musk was donating $1 million of his personal money to the Tesla Museum.

It was worth the wait.

As for Tesla himself? He may no-longer be around to appreciate the generous gift from the company which bears his name, but we suspect he’d be pretty pleased.

Happy birthday, Tesla.

That is really fantastic, Elon really seems to genuinely have a great respect for Nikola Tesla. It makes me feel good to know that they didn’t just use Nikola’s name for the sake of their image. They’ve used the name well and paid respect to Nikola.
