With a price tag of $135,700 before incentives, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car is already a rather exclusive car. Costing more than a fully-specced, all-electric Tesla Model S P85+ sedan, even BMW admits that many of its BMW i8 customers are the kind of people to already have an extensive high-performance or prestige car collection.
If you’re the kind of person who can afford to visit the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance every year with a view to extending your automotive collection at the equally-famous Pebble Beach Auctions however, the chances are a stock BMW i8 is just a little too common for your tastes.
It’s no surprise then that BMW North America is using the occasion of this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to auction off a one-of-a-kind 2014 BMW i8, with proceeds of the auction going to charity.
What’s more, the unique BMW i8 will be available to the winning bidder more than a month ahead of BMW’s official U.S launch of the i8.
Called the BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition, the one-off car will feature the same plug-in hybrid drivetrain and mechanicals as its less-exclusive cousin, but will be finished in an exclusive Frozen Grey Metallic paint and Dalbergia Brown leather. In case the winning bidder forgets they own a one-off version of the BMW i8, BMW says it will laser etch the words “Concours d’Elegance Edition” inside the vehicle.
If that isn’t enough, BMW says the i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will also be the first i8 plug-in hybrid to go on sale in the U.S. with the highly-anticipated but delayed laser headlights debuted on the original i8 concept vehicle. It will also debut BMW’s i8 Display key and come with the first ever professional edition of BMW’s Charging Station. Presumably, BMW will install said charger at the chosen location of the winning bidder.
While BMW isn’t about to give a guide price for this special edition of its yet-to-launch i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, we’re hoping the car commands a lot of attention and a high price tag.
That’s because the proceeds of the sale will go to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, a philanthropic arm of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance which has awarded more than $3.5 million in grants to local education programs spanning a wide range of subjects in Monterey County, Ca.
The BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will be auctioned off on August 16 at the Pebble Beach Auctions presented by Gooding & Company in the Pebble Beach Special Events Arena. The official Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be held the following day on August 17, 2014.
