Stretching from sea to shining sea across the U.S., Tesla’s ever-expanding network of Supercharger stations have revolutionised the way we think about electric car travel. In Europe and Asia too, Tesla Supercharger stations are becoming an ever-more common sight, seemingly popping up overnight in new and interesting locations on an almost daily basis.
But just how is a Tesla Supercharger site built, and what is involved in turning a regular parking lot into a Tesla Supercharger location?
Usually, Tesla’s chosen contractors keep the ins and outs of Supercharger construction a closely-guarded secret, but one electrical contractor has bared all with a unique and informative time-lapse video of a new Supercharger construction in Goodland, Kansas.
Enter Electric Conduit Construction (via Christophe Hubert) , a specialist construction company based out of Elburn, Illinois. After being awarded the contract to construct the Goodland Supercharger, the company decided to film a time-lapse of the construction process, starting with the official groundbreaking on May 27, 2014.
Located next to a Holiday Inn, the greenfield site was then transformed in just eleven days into a fully functioning Tesla Supercharger site ready to charge customers’ cars.
The time lapse video below is mesmerising to watch and shows just how much work is needed to build a 130 kilowatt Supercharger site. In the case of the Goodland, Kansas location, this included laying power lines from a power line 600 feet away from the proposed site to the footings and pads for the main Tesla Supercharger transformer.
With the sod relaid and site tidied up after installation, the brand new Goodland Superchargers look simple and elegant, not betraying in any way the amount of hard work which went into their installation.
While that might be the way Tesla intended when it designed its super sleek superchargers, we think it’s worth a few seconds of grateful thought to the construction companies who are working all over the world to bring EV charging to your area the next time you plug in.
