It might be nearly fifty years since the original Star Trek burst onto our Television screens with Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future, but Captain James Tiberius Kirk and his trusty Vulcan first officer-cum-scientist Mr. Spock have come back from the future to let us know that driving plug-in cars is the way to the future.
At least, actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have, courtesy of a new Volkswagen ad campaign called #vwfuture.
Naturally, the aim of the German-language ad is to promote the idea that driving a plug-in car from Volkswagen is to drive the future today, and features both Shatner and Nimoy behind the wheel of a plug-in Volkswagen.
There’s even a behind-the-scenes documentary about the ad itself, which you can see below.
But some of the other VW YouTube features for the ad campaign — in which the two actors answer more general questions about VW’s plug-in cars and their lives on the Enterprise –feel a little weird and at times, a little forced, especially the one involving William Shatner introducing the e-Golf.
There’s also a rather weird YouTube short involving William Shatner being given a tour of a young fan’s bedroom, which is adorned with enough Star Trek memorabilia to make The Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy jealous. What this has to do with electric cars we’re not entirely sure, but we’re sure someone will explain it to us.
But here at Transport Evolved, we can forgive the ad campaign if only because of Mr. Spock’s classic “Fascinating” line, delivered by Leonard Nimoy perfectly every time.
Volkswagen’s plug-in ad campaign certainly does go where no ad has gone before, but is it effective? Would it encourage you to drive a plug-in car? Or is this yet another failed EV ad campaign?
