Why The Renault ZOE Is Europe’s Killer EV Right Now — And Could Stay That Way Too

Forget about the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, or Tesla Model 3. Renault’s unassuming ZOE electric hatchback is currently undergoing a massive rise in sales across Europe, making it the most popular plug-in car across the continent for the first quarter of this year.

Despite being nearly as old as the Nissan LEAF in terms of its design, the Renault ZOE recently gained a massive battery pack upgrade, going from 24 kilowatt-hours of capacity to a whopping 40 kilowatt-hours.

And that, as we explain in the video above, has changed things forever for the four-seat plug-in.

  • I drove a Zoe for 3 years and now have another 3-year lease for a 30 kWh LEAF. To be honest, stopgaps for the Model 3.

    Although there is much to love about the Zoe, it does come with the typical Renault level of fit & finish. The suspension is quite hard and every speed bump feels like a launch. The room in the back is too small for adults or even modern day teenagers. The support from Renault is terrible. I had numerous problems with the telematics system, not being able to start charging through the app, or no updates on charge levels, etc. The garage only provided updates, and when it finally died completely, the warranty was just over. No clemency from Renault: the leasing company had to pay the full price for the repair.

    But the worst was the comfort in warm weather: the windshield doesn’t have any heat blocking properties to speak of and the air vents have been designed by a sadist to not allow you to point the airflow where the sun shines: in you lap. So weird for a French car. Remember the Ladas back in the good old days of the USSR? Everything was wrong with them, except for one thing: the heating! Russians like to be kept warm in their grueling winters. I would have thought that the French would like to be kept cool in their hot summers, but apparently it doesn’t work that way.

    The Zoe was my first and last Renault.
