Teslas are fast, full of tech, can travel further than any other electric car on sale today — and are highly sought after… especially in markets where Tesla isn’t currently focusing sales. They also happen to be kind of expensive and difficult to find parts for outside of Tesla’s service network, which makes them the ideal target for car thieves eager to make a quick buck.
Traditionally Tesla’s always-on Internet connection in its cars has offered some deterrent to would-be car thieves, but recently there’s been an increase in the number of reported Tesla thefts.
