Ever since the launch of cars like the Nissan LEAF back in late 2010, electric cars have been produced and sold by automakers with a heavy emphasis on in-car technology, futuristic capabilities, and interior design that appeals heavily to early-adopters.

But while those of us who like our technology bleeding edge love it, some potential customers are being left out in the cold by gadget-heavy interiors, large touch-screen displays, and menu items many layers deep. Worse still, it’s leaving some customers turned off electric cars altogether.

So just how do you design a car that appeals to gadget lovers and mainstream auto buyers alike? How do you not alienate one group while catering to the others’ tastes, and is there a happy medium between the two?
