Plug-in Hybrids have always been treated with a little distain by some electric vehicle fans. After all, rather than be entirely powered by electricity, they do also feature a ‘gas guzzling’ internal combustion engine that can put some off owning one.

But can Plug-in Hybrids help people to make the switch to electric vehicles? Are they a good buy for those looking for an affordable entry into the plug-in marketplace? And which models should you consider?

    The problem I have with PHEVs is most drivers don’t understand the technology. I’ve seen at least 2 or 3 studies that show anywhere between 65% and 85% of PHEV drivers NEVER plug in. So, they end up hauling around the dead weight of the batteries and whining that they aren’t getting the fuel economy they were promised. Like pure EVs, I place the failure to educate the public on the auto makers.

    I moved from 14 years of hybrids (Prius gen 2, 3 and 4, Prius C, Camry hybrid) to a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) 18 months ago and it’s the best car I’ve ever had! It was 2 years old, sitting in the main Mitsu dealer – not even charged when I test drove it (there are about half a dozen sitting around Melbourne Australia). It was much cheaper than the diesel model! It has a real electric range of about 30 km (not miles) which is usually enough for me to simply charge at home overnight (100% renewable). If I need to go elsewhere I charge at work as well. I have learnt to drive moderately and can stay 100% electric even up to 110km/hr. Last year the engine started and I got a warning triangle on the dashboard with the message ‘Engine started to protect fuel system’ . Ah yes, said the garage – you haven’t put in any fuel for 3 months. Well, I still had 3/4 of a tank so why would I! Since then I’ve only kept it topped up to half full, so I’m also carrying less weight around! And last time I filled (to half), it showed I was down to 0.75 litres/100km. Of course I’d like a Tesla, but until then, this is a great way to drive electric!

    Hi Nikki, I had to listen this video again to see if I missed BMW getting a mention.
    I still have my lovely blue Leaf (2011) but for a year now I also am leasing an i3 94 rex.
    I chose as basic as possible on a great 3 year deal.
    Ok it is just 4 seats, has silly rear doors, hand luggage only and gives a bumpy ride but it’s a great drive, good for me to do 95% of my miles electric. Driven sensibly you get a 120 miles + a further 100 petrol.
    Do you not class a no extras i3 rex affordable?
