Over the weekend, an Uber SUV collided with a woman pushing her bicycle across the road in Tempe, Arizona. It was night time, and the car appears not to have seen the woman as she begun to cross. Camera footage from the car suggests (according to local police) that the shadows were such that neither car nor its human supervisor would have seen and reacted to the woman in time.

Any fatality involving autonomous vehicles will of course be heavily scrutinized. It was when Joshua Brown, well-known Tesla advocate, was killed during a freak accident involving his Model S, inappropriate Autopilot use, high sun glare and a white tractor trailer unit.

It is important of course to collect and reflect on Sunday’s tragedy before moving forward with autonomous vehicle development — but what observations and modifications can be made from such a terrible loss of life?
