In the past ten years or so, there’s been a gradual shift away from hatchbacks and sedans (saloons) toward SUVs and crossover SUVs.  Since SUVs, crossovers and pickup trucks represent the largest profit area for automakers, some are even choosing to ditch other vehicle styles completely in certain markets. For example, Ford recently announced its intention to kill all of its current vehicle lineup (except its pickup trucks, SUVs and Mustang muscle car) in order to retool and focus almost exclusively on SUVs and pickups.

At one point, such an announcement would have clean vehicle fans howling in anguish. But that may no longer be the case. Indeed, SUVs may make building electric cars easier.
