Earlier this week, Tesla announced that it was in the final stages of obtaining all the necessary permits and approvals to begin constructing its third Gigafactory — named Gigafactory 3 — in Shanghai, China.

Big enough to eventually produce some half million electric cars per year (as well as all of the battery packs and motors needed for each car), Tesla’s new Gigafactory will be one of the largest projects Tesla has undertaken to date.

But Tesla’s latest Gigafactory isn’t just good news for those wanting to see more Teslas on the road. It could give Tesla a way to avoid the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, as well as dramatically reduce its overheads.
