As electric car battery packs age, they lose their ability to provide the high currents needed to power an electric vehicle along. Usually, this process takes many, many years, but ultimately every lithium-ion battery pack found in an electric car will eventually need to be retired — either when the vehicle retires or after providing upwards of eight years (and often a decade or more) of service.

Lately, we’ve had many people comment on our channel to say that at this point, electric vehicle battery packs must be disposed of in landfill and as such, electric vehicles are not environmentally friendly. But in reality, most electric car battery packs in use today are destined not for the scrap heap but second-life battery projects and then (after a really long life) hopeful recycling.
