Earlier today, (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/19/business/nissan-carlos-ghosn-misconduct.html) Carlos Ghosn, Chairman of Nissan, Chairman and CEO of Renault and Chairman of Mitsubishi, was arrested in Tokyo following an internal whistleblower investigation at Nissan that allegedly discovered Ghosn, aided by another Nissan Executive, underreported his annual compensation to the tune of $44.1 million. He also stands accused of using Nissan assets for his own personal use.
Ghosn will face charges in Tokyo, and Nissan has already started the process to remove him as Chairman of the Board at the company. Renault meanwhile, is to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the turn of events and to ensure its own interests are protected.
Here’s what we know thus far, what Ghosn’s position at the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is, and what the future could mean for all three companies (and their electric car plans).
