As one of the world’s largest automakers, Volkswagen AG — which owns many brands, including Volkswagen cars, Audi, Porsche, Bugatti, Bentley, Skoda and SEAT — makes and sells more than ten million cars a year.

Despite the criminal activity that lead to Dieselgate, Volkswagen still enjoys a very healthy balance sheet. And while many electric car fans are dismissive of Volkswagen because of Dieselgate and its constant electric car promises with no production cars to show for it, Volkswagen is finally starting its assault on the electric car market.

And it represents the biggest threat — or rather competition — that Tesla has ever seen.
