[UPDATED] Is The Smart Car About To Die? Or Is It Getting A New Life Thanks to China?

[EDIT] Since the publishing of this report, Daimler and Geely have confirmed the establishing of a joint company to develop Smart as a global electric brand: https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/ko/en/42917172. While this means some of the video above is no-longer accurate, we’re keeping it here for historical purposes.

The Smart Car has, believe it or not, been around for twenty-five years.

And in that time it’s enjoyed several incarnations, including the all-electric Smart ForTwo ED and Smart ForFour ED.

A few years ago, Daimler, Smart’s parent company, said that Smart would go all-electric in North America. A year later, it said the entire global Smart brand would go all-electric.

But now, as Daimler CEO and known Smart Car supporter Dieter Zetsche readies for retirement, there’s rumors that the Smart Car may not have long to live. Or it might get reincarnated thanks to a fifty percent acquisition from Geely.

Watch the video above to find out what each outcome means.
